127 film arrived in 1912 as Kodak’s neat, no‑nonsense roll‑film format — small, straightforward, and ideal for everything from Vest Pocket cameras to the bright, cheerful snapshot models of the 60s and 70s. Its compact cartridge and generously sized frame made it a go‑to choice for everyday photography.
A century on, most surviving 127 negatives and slides are delicate, often tucked away in less‑than‑ideal conditions. Digitising them stops further deterioration in its tracks, pulls out far more detail than any old print ever could, and makes it easy to restore, archive, reprint and share these rare images for years to come.

Potted History of the 127 Film Format
Introduced by Kodak in 1912 for the Vest Pocket Kodak, 127 was a compact 46 mm roll film that delivered surprisingly large negatives from genuinely pocket‑sized cameras. Early versions included Autographic A127, letting users write notes on the backing paper.
By the mid‑20th century, 127 had become a mainstream amateur format, powering simple box cameras like the Kodak Brownie 127. Its golden moment came in the 1950s with high‑quality 4×4 cm TLRs—Baby Rolleiflex, Yashica‑44—which produced bright, oversized Superslide transparencies for projection.
The format declined through the 1960s–90s as 35 mm and Kodak’s cartridge systems (126, 110) took over. Kodak ended production in 1995, and 127 was dropped from ISO standards soon after.
Today it survives as a niche enthusiast format, kept alive by small manufacturers and community projects that cut 120 film down to size or produce limited‑run emulsions. Despite its modest footprint, 127 remains one of film photography’s most charming compact formats.
